Reduce Inflammation With Meditation

A recent study shows that mindfulness-based meditation is not only a stress reducer, but can also help with chronic inflammatory conditions. These conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma.

 

The researchers assigned volunteers into 1 of 2 groups: an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program or an 8-week active control health enhancement program. The first concentrated on breathing, body sensations, and mental focus while seated, walking, or practicing yoga. The latter group’s program consisted of walking, balance, agility, core strength, nutritional education, and music therapy.

 

Both groups experienced similar levels of reduction of psychological distress. However, the study showed that the group using the mindfulness-based stress reduction program had considerable less post-stress inflammatory responses associated with the previously mentioned conditions.

 

An interesting observation about the mind-body connection.
